Which USB-C charger should you buy?

A charger is good value when it supplies the power your device needs without making you buy accessories twice. Start with the wattage and charging protocol recommended by your device maker, then decide how many devices you will charge together.

Choose the setup that fits your use

For a phone and light travel

30W USB-C Power Delivery UK plug charger

A compact single-port plug keeps a travel bag simple. Check your phone’s supported charging protocol and whether a suitable cable comes in the box.

Check first: One port means charging devices in turn. A higher advertised wattage does not guarantee a faster charge for your phone.

For a compatible USB-C laptop

65W USB-C Power Delivery UK charger

Consider this class only when your laptop’s recommended adapter is 65W or below. Match the plug, cable and charging specification before comparing prices.

Check first: Some laptops need more power. Check the single-port output, rather than the total printed on a multiport charger.

For a desk with several devices

100W multiport USB-C UK charger

Look for an output table showing the power available with two or three ports occupied. Compare the cost with keeping your existing laptop adapter.

Check first: Shared power may fall when another device is connected. Extra ports are useful only if you need them.

Compare the complete charging setup

Put the plug and any required cable into the same basket before comparing offers. A cheaper bare charger can cost more once a cable is added. Match the exact model and UK plug version; an overseas adapter is not an equivalent offer.

Read the output table

The total wattage across all ports is different from the power available to one device. Check the two-device and three-device combinations you will actually use. USB-C describes a connector; charging capabilities still depend on the device, adapter and cable.

When to keep what you have

If the existing charger meets your device’s needs, a replacement may add convenience rather than improve charging. Buy the extra port, smaller size or travel setup that solves a specific problem.
