External SSD buying guide: capacity, ports and backup needs
An external SSD should fit the device and task you have now. Compare the capacity you need, the connector on your computer and the connection standard supported by both sides. A fast drive cannot remove a slower port or cable from the path.

Choose the setup that fits your use
For documents and a small photo library
500GB portable external SSD USB C
Start with the space used by the files you plan to store, then leave room for growth. Check whether the drive works with your computer’s ports.
Check first: A smaller drive can become cramped if you later add video or games. Check actual usable space and format requirements.

For a larger working library
1TB portable external SSD USB C
Compare the same capacity and connection specification. Read whether the advertised speed is a maximum figure and what equipment is needed to reach it.
Check first: The computer, enclosure and cable can limit transfers. Do not choose solely by the largest speed number.

For moving large files
2TB portable external SSD USB 10Gbps
Consider more capacity when your measured file collection needs it. Confirm the port standard and included cable before comparing prices.
Check first: Extra capacity has value only when you use it. Keep a separate backup of files you cannot replace.

Match connectors and standards
USB-C is a connector shape, not a guarantee of a particular data rate. Check the exact drive, your computer port and the cable as a set. If you need an adapter, add it to the basket cost and check its specification too.
Compare capacity consistently
Compare like-for-like capacities and pack contents. A drive with a bundled hub is a different package from the bare drive. For each offer, check whether the seller is supplying a new, used or refurbished unit.
Storage is not the same as backup
If the external drive becomes the only copy of a file, it is storage rather than an additional backup. Plan another copy of important material and check compatibility with your backup software before moving files.
Your checkout checklist
- Capacity based on your actual files
- Computer port and cable data rate
- Included connectors and adapters
- Operating-system and file-format requirements
- Separate backup for important files
